Matty Matthews (born July 13, 1873 in New York City , New York , USA as William Matthews , † December 6, 1948 ) was an American boxer and welterweight champion .

The normal boom made his professional debut against his compatriot California Jack Dempsey with a classic knockout victory in the 8th round on March 3, 1893. In his second fight, he had his first bankruptcy against Joe Burke plug in.

On October 16, 1900, he boxed against Ruben Ferns for the universal world championship and won over 15 rounds on points. He held this title until May 24, 1901; because on that day he lost him in a rematch against Ferns by knockout in a fight scheduled for 20 rounds by knockout in round 10.

His last fight took place on August 19, 1908 against the Irish-born American Patsy Sweeney, which he won unanimously on points.
