Moors and Christians from Alcoy
As Moors and Christians of Alcoy ( Valencian Moros i cristians d'Alcoi , Spanish Moros y Cristianos de Alcoy ) a festival in the city is Alcoy ( Alicante , Valencian Community ) denotes that the struggle between the Muslim Moors and Christians in the context of conquest and Intended to represent the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula.
The festival in Alcoy is considered the most famous of the Moros-y-Cristianos spectacles. It takes place annually around St. George's Day (April 23). It commemorates St. George who, according to a legend, appeared during the battle against the Moors and came to the aid of the Christians.
The Alcoy Festival was named "of International Tourist Interest" as early as 1980 and is considered the cradle of all Moors and Christians festivals in the Valencian Community.
