Maurice Janet

Maurice Janet (* 1888 ; † 1983 ) was a French mathematician. He was a professor in Caen and after the Second World War at the Sorbonne .

life and work

Janet bases, Janet sequences and an associated algorithm in the theory of systems of partial differential equations are named after him. In 1926 he proved results in advance of Nash's later embedding theorem . He gave lectures on analysis and partial differential equations, Laplace transforms and integral equations, mathematical equations of physics, mechanics and celestial mechanics (including stability issues). In the 1950s and 1960s he led a seminar on mechanics and celestial mechanics at the Sorbonne in Paris.

In 1948 he was president of the Société Mathématique de France .

He was a friend of the mathematician Ernest Vessiot . Janet was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto in 1924 (Sur les systèmes linéaires d´hypersurfaces), in Zurich in 1932 (Détermination explicite des certains minima) and in Oslo in 1936 (Sur les systèmes des deux équations aux dérivées partielles à deux fonctions inconnues) .
