description

Branch with leaves

Agathis ovata grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 1 to 8, in exceptional cases up to 25 meters. The smaller plants branch out at the base, while larger plants can have an unbranched trunk up to 12 meters long. The crown is flattened. The yellowish-brown branches go alternately, opposite or in threes to quadruples from the trunk. The whitish to light brown trunk bark has noticeable furrows. The inner bark is reddish-brown in color.

The round buds consist of four scales. The leaves are on a flattened petiole and are ovate to ovate-elliptical with a length of 4 to 8 centimeters and a width of 1 to 5 centimeters. They have a blunt end of the leaf, the leaf margins are slightly bent back. The upper side of the leaf is dark green in color, while the underside is pale green to blue-green in color.

The blue-green male cones have a 0.4 to 0.6 centimeter long sturdy stem and are cylindrical in shape with a length of 3 to 5 centimeters and a thickness of 1.0 to 1.5 centimeters. The triangular microsporophylls overlap like roof tiles. The spherical female cones are up to 12 centimeters long and up to 10 centimeters thick. They consist of brown cone scales with a tapering umbo . The seeds have wings and are 0.9 to 1.1 inches long and around 0.8 inches wide.

Occurrence and endangerment

The natural range of Agathis ovata is in the southern part of New Caledonia . It extends there from Mont Humboldt to Mont des Sources , with the northern limit of distribution being in the municipality of Kouaoua .

Agathis ovata thrives at altitudes of 150 to 1150 meters. It grows individually or in small stocks in maquis or in closed rainforests. Only soils that have formed on ultramafic rock are populated .

Agathis ovata is classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List . The main reasons given are the destruction of the habitat by mining activities and fires. In addition, the regeneration and growth rate of the species is estimated to be very low. The total stock is considered to be in decline.

Systematics

Agathis ovata is assigned to the Rostrata section within the genus of the Kauri trees ( Agathis ) .

It was first described as Dammara ovata in 1862 by Charles Moore in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique , Volume 4, Number 16, p. 56. Otto Warburg put the species as Agathis ovata in Monsunia in 1900 , Contributions to the knowledge of the vegetation of the South and East Asian monsoon area , Volume 1, p. 186 in the genus Agathis . Further synonyms for Agathis ovata (C.Moore ex Vieill.) Warb. are Agathis hypoleuca (C. Moore ex Henkel & W. Hochst.) Warb. , Dammara hypoleuca C. Moore ex Henkel & W.
