The mauritius images GmbH is an independent, owner-run Agency , the (later Ernest) in Berlin by Ernst Mayer in 1920 originally as a publisher was founded.

history

In addition to the publishing business, Ernst Mayer brokered pictures from freelance photographers to illustrated magazines such as the BIZ and the Münchner Illustrierte Presse , sold entire series of reports and was soon financially successful. After the National Socialists came to power, he came under increasing pressure. As early as 1933, the agency was denounced as Jewish in the “Deutsche Nachrichten”. Since he had to sell the company and because of the opportunities he saw for himself after a trip to the USA, Ernst Mayer emigrated to the United States in 1935. With 5,000 pictures in his luggage and numerous contacts to photographers, he founded the “ Black Star ” photo agency in New York that same year together with Kurt Safranski and Kurt Kornfeld . After the chaos of war, Helmut Zwez, who bought mauritius images, rebuilt the archive in 1947 at the company's current location in Mittenwald. In 1969, Hans-Jörg Zwez joined his father's company, which he took over in 1972. He made mauritius images one of the leading picture agencies in Germany and Europe and temporarily maintained offices in Vienna, Stuttgart, Berlin, Hamburg and Stockholm. Stefan Ploghaus has been the company's managing director and owner since 2015.
