Maurolycus is an impact crater to the south of the front of the moon , east of Stöfler crater and northwest of Barocius . The rim of the crater is partly heavily eroded and terraced . The inside of the crater is largely flat and has a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the polymath Franciscus Maurolicus .
