Maurycy Szymel
Maurycy Szymel , also: Mosheh (born 1903 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary ; died 1942 in Lemberg) was a Polish writer, publicist and translator into Yiddish and Polish .
Life
Maurycy Szymel grew up in a Yiddish-speaking working-class family in Lemberg, where he attended high school. Szymel moved to Warsaw , where he wrote in Yiddish and Polish for the Jewish press. His first poem appeared in the children's newspaper Chwila in 1925 . From 1933 to 1935 he and Roman Brandstaetter published several contradicting articles on Polish-Jewish literature and identity in the magazine Opinia . He translated works by Zusman Segałowicz and Lejb Małach from Yiddish into Polish .
During the German invasion of Poland in 1939, he returned to Lemberg, which was now occupied by the Soviets . After the German occupation of Lviv , he worked in the administration of the Judenrat in the Lviv ghetto, which was ordered by the Germans . Szymel died of the conditions in the Lemberg-Janowska Forced Labor Camp .
