Roman Brandstaetter

Roman Brandstaetter (born January 3, 1906 in Tarnów , Austria-Hungary , † September 28, 1987 in Poznań ) was a Polish writer .

Life

Roman Brandstaetter was born into a Polish-Jewish family. He studied Polish Studies at the University of Cracow . During the Second World War he lived as an emigrant in Palestine . Brandstaetter was cultural attaché at the embassy of the Republic of Poland in Rome from 1946 to 1948 . In 1948 he returned to Poland. He lived first in Poznań, then in Zakopane, and from 1960 until his death again in Poznań.

He has written novels, historical dramas, and religious poetry. He also translated from German, English (Shakespeare), French, Hebrew, Dutch and Czech. He wrote Kroniki Assyżu (1947, The Road to Assisi ) about his conversion to the Catholic faith.
