The Mount Stuart Mausoleum , also known as Scoulag Church , is a mausoleum on the Scottish island of Bute . It is on the lands of Mount Stuart House near the east coast of the island about four kilometers southeast of Rothesay , the island's main town. In 1971 Mount Stuart House was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

history

The building was likely completed in the early 1730s. It was originally planned as a church building, possibly as a replacement for the old main church of the Parish Kingarth . The building, perhaps planned by Alexander McGill , was never regularly used as a church. According to older reports, there were previously one or two chapels at the same location, but their existence cannot be proven today on the basis of documents. The building was later used as the mausoleum of the Lords of Mount Stuart.

The building has a T-shaped floor plan. It consists of broken stone, partially in traditional Harling was plastered technique and includes at the sides with a slate-covered hip roof , the front down with a saddle roof from. The building edges, as well as the windows and entrance doors, are set off with red sandstone . The entrance area is crowned by a triangular gable with ox-eye . Four lancet twin windows and two entrance doors in the center are arranged symmetrically on the rear . In contrast to the one-story entrance area, the rear is built on two floors. The building was severely damaged by a flood in 1994.
