Mavrotragano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The red wine variety Mavrotragano ( Greek μαύρος mavros , German 'black' ; τραγανός traganos 'crispy', 'crunchy') is native to the Greek island of Santorini , part of the Cyclades archipelago . In his Ampelography of Greek Grape Varieties, published in 1943, V. Krimbas classified the Mavrotragano variety close to the Mavroudi variety .

Almost extinct a few years ago, Mavrotragano is now grown on less than 2% of the cultivated area of the Santorini wine-growing region, with a rapidly increasing trend . The vintner Paris Sigalas played a pioneering role in the new beginning. After first attempts with blends together with the Mandilaria grape variety , he is now also offering the wine single-variety .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The bronze-colored, spotted young leaves are only slightly hairy.
  • The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide in comparison to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is medium in size. The round berries are medium-sized and blue-black in color.

The late growing grape variety ripens approx. 20 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to be medium late ripening within the white grape varieties. In Greece it can usually be harvested between August 20th and September 5th.
