Max Carl Paul Schmidt (born May 20, 1853 in Berlin ; † January 7, 1918 there ) was a German classical philologist and grammar school teacher.

Life

The son of the grammar school teacher Franz Schmidt (1826-1890) attended the Friedrichs grammar school in Berlin and studied from 1871 to 1876 at the Humboldt University in Berlin . On 22 October 1875 he was with a dissertation on Polybius Dr. phil. PhD . On May 16, 1876, he passed the state examination in Latin, Greek and German, and on June 16, 1877, he passed the extension examination in the subjects of religion and mathematics. From Easter 1876 to April 6, 1877, he completed the probationary year at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium , where he then worked as an assistant teacher.

On April 1, 1878, Schmidt was employed as a senior teacher at the Askanisches Gymnasium . At Easter 1895 he moved to the Prinz-Heinrich-Gymnasium in Schöneberg , where he was later appointed high school professor. He retired on October 1, 1912 and was awarded the third class crown .

Since April 1, 1906, Schmidt taught Latin style at the University of Berlin.

In addition to his work at school and university, Schmidt also dealt with technical and didactic questions. He edited the series of Classical Philological Contributions in several booklets and published essays on Latin stylistics and various aspects of Latin teaching. His programmatic book Realistic Chrestomathy from the Literature of Classical Antiquity was first published in 1900/1901 in three parts and in 1913 in the third edition.

Schmidt was a great-nephew of Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn . For the festivities in Mansfeld on the occasion of the 100th birthday of Junghuhn, he wrote the memorial book “ Franz Junghuhn. Biographical contributions to the 100th anniversary of his birthday, “Leipzig 1909. Four years later, the book “ Mansfeld Sketches: Poetry and Truth from the Old County ” appeared on Junghuhn's hometown , Leipzig 1913.

Max CP Schmidt died in Berlin in 1918 at the age of 64. His grave is in the Evangelical Churchyard Nikolassee .
