Evangelical churchyard Nikolassee
The Evangelical Cemetery Nikolassee , also Ev. Kirchhof Nikolassee , is the cemetery of the Protestant parish Nikolassee . It is located east of the Kirchweg in the Berlin district of Nikolassee . The cemetery was created in connection with the villa colony in Nikolassee 1906–1907. Today it has an area of 17,523 square meters and is a listed building as a whole . In addition, the cemetery chapel , the enclosure wall and 19 graves are protected as individual architectural monuments. There are five honorary graves of the State of Berlin in the cemetery . The state of Berlin categorizes the cemetery as a forest cemetery.
history
In 1906, five years after the Nikolassee villa colony was founded (which became an independent Prussian rural community in 1910), Heimstätten-AG , the founder of Nikolassee, made an 11,490 square meter area available as a church and parish property. Of this, 5,312 square meters were laid out as a burial place and consecrated church in October 1907. Directly opposite, on the western side of the Kirchweg, the Nikolassee Church was built between 1909 and 1910 . In 1909 the parish was removed from the Zehlendorf mother parish and a parish office was set up, and in 1910 the cemetery was taken over by the new parish.
The design of the cemetery was carried out by the architect Johannes Bartschat . The wall and gate on Kirchweg come from Bartschat's original design from 1906.
In the years 1912–1913 a T-shaped chapel was laid out on the cemetery grounds. Johannes Bartschat again provided the drafts. Enclosure with wall and gate as well as the chapel are attributed to the beginning of modernism .
The original cemetery area was expanded in 1913 by 3600 square meters and in 1918 by a further 6800 square meters. The last expansion so far, which also involved a redesign of the cemetery according to plans by Richard Köhler , took place in 1939/40.
In July 1940 the community had a high stone cross shaped as an iron cross built by the architect Wilfried Wendland on the new part of the churchyard . With this simple memorial for those who died in the previous wars, the practice of putting swastikas on graves could be countered. This cross, on the other hand, symbolizes the cross of Jesus Christ as a sign of salvation and peace. In 1957 this memorial was given an iron tendril of thorns by the artist Gerhart Schreiter , with which the victims of the Second World War are reminded.
In 1951 the painting of the chapel was renewed and the following slogan (5.2 LUT ) applied to the gable above the entrance from Romans : "We boast of the hope of future glory." Over time, the building has undergone further renovations and modernizations , the inscription “Be happy in hope, be patient in tribulation, stop praying” ( Romans 12.12 EU ) was placed on the chapel gable.
The chapel, the cemetery wall and numerous graves such as those of Walther Epstein , Erich Koehler or Theo von Brockhusen are listed as historical monuments.
