Walther Epstein
Walther Leo Epstein (born May 11, 1874 in Breslau ; † February 3, 1918 in Oberstdorf ) was a German architect and government master builder .
Life
Epstein came from a wealthy family in Breslau. His parents were the factory owner Joseph Epstein and his wife Marie Friedenthal. His brother was the chemist Friedrich Epstein .
Epstein studied architecture at the TH Munich , the TH Hannover and the TH Charlottenburg . During his studies he became a member of the Danubia Munich fraternity in 1894 . In 1899 he passed his first main examination in building construction and became a government building supervisor . The second main examination followed in 1903 and he became a government master builder. From 1903 he worked in the Prussian Ministry of Culture , in 1904 in St. Louis . He went on a study tour through North America , Japan , China and India . In 1905 he left the civil service. In the southwest of Berlin he built numerous villas and country houses , on which he also worked with Georg Kolbe , who supplied architectural sculptures for his buildings. Kolbe also created bronze busts of Epstein, his wife Else and his daughter Annemarie (married Meier-Graefe). In 1914 he took part in the Great Berlin Jubilee Exhibition.
His grave, the work of the sculptor Richard Scheibe , is located in the Evangelical Churchyard Nikolassee and is now a listed building.
