Werner Thärichen
Werner Thärichen (born August 18, 1921 in Neuhardenberg ; † April 24, 2008 in Berlin ) was a German drummer , solo timpanist with the Berlin Philharmonic and composer .
Life
Thärichen studied composition and conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, but also learned to play the flute and piano and was a drummer and timpanist in the orchestras of the Hamburg State Opera and the State Opera Unter den Linden in Berlin. From 1948 to 1984 he was first principal timpanist of the Berliner Philharmoniker under Wilhelm Furtwängler and then especially under Herbert von Karajan and temporarily also on the board of the orchestra.
As a music maker, he left behind an oeuvre of more than 70 works. World premieres of his compositions were conducted by conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache , Eugen Jochum and Herbert von Karajan.
His Concerto for Timpani and Orchestra, op. 34 (1954), which he often performed himself as a soloist or as a conductor at home and abroad, became particularly well known . Up until the end he worked on his opera Nur 40 Tage about the biblical Jonah story, which is to be premiered in Potsdam in 2010.
Thärichen was professor of orchestral conducting at the University of the Arts in Berlin, honorary professor at Gei-Dai University in Tokyo and president of the Wilhelm Furtwängler conductor workshop in Mürzzuschlag in Austria. The jazz musician Nicolai Thärichen is his son.
He is buried in the Evangelical Churchyard Nikolassee .

In 1965 Thärichen received the Düsseldorf City Art Prize.
