Franz Gerhard Schmitt (born November 6, 1909 in Taupadel ; † October 8, 2000 in Berlin ) was a German theologian and pastor.

Life

Schmitt was the son of a Protestant pastor. He studied theology at the universities in Kiel, Heidelberg, Königsberg, Bonn, Berlin and Rostock . As a theology student, he joined the NSDAP in 1931 ( membership number 624.169). He later interrupted his studies and became a functionary in the National Socialist German Student Union . In 1934 Schmitt was barracked as a full-time SA leader in various SA camps and gave practical and ideological lessons. In November of the same year he resigned from his "military-political profession" at his own request. He continued his studies and at the end of 1942 became a military chaplain in the Navy .

From 1945 he was pastor in Sanitz and was denazified in 1948 . From 1951 he worked as a cathedral preacher in Güstrow . In this position he trusted his nephews Joachim Gauck and Gerhild Radtke. From 1954 to 1959 he was state superintendent of the Mecklenburg church district of Güstrow and from 1964 general superintendent of East Berlin . In this position he was one of the organizers of Martin Luther King's 1964 visit to East Berlin. In 1974 he retired and moved to West Berlin .

Gerhard Schmitt died in Berlin in 2000 at the age of 90. His grave is in the Evangelical Churchyard Nikolassee .
