Max Fischer (art collector)

Max Fischer (* 1886 ; † 1975 ) was a German art collector , chemist and entrepreneur.

Live and act

Fischer was born in 1886 as the son of an innkeeper from Tübingen . He had a doctorate in chemistry and headed the United Wax Goods Factory in Ditzingen . During the Second World War he served as a soldier in southern Italy.

Fischer was part of the Stuttgart art scene even before World War II. In the 1920s he began collecting, which increasingly included contemporary art. In addition to Expressionist graphics by Max Beckmann and Otto Dix , his early acquisitions also included paintings by Oskar Schlemmer from Stuttgart .

In 2008 the heirs of Fischer donated his collection of over 250 works to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart on permanent loan. In 2010, part of it was shown there in the special exhibition Brücke, Bauhaus, Blauer Reiter: Treasures from the Max Fischer Collection .
