Max Pestemer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Max Pestemer (born July 1, 1908 in Graz , † 1975 in Graz) was an Austrian chemist .

life and work

Max Pestemer studied chemistry in Graz with Fritz Kohlrausch and Robert Kremann , received his doctorate there in 1930 and qualified as a professor in 1935 in physical and theoretical chemistry. From 1933 to 1942 he taught at the University of Graz , was head of the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry from 1937 to 1940 and a substitute professor from 1940 to 1942. Erwin Schauenstein was one of his students .

Pestemer was a pioneer in absorption spectrometry . After his design, he had a first instrument built at the institute, which could be used for successful research.

In 1942 he left Graz and was professor for physical chemistry at Kiel University until 1946 . He then switched to Bayer in Leverkusen and built up the spectroscopy department there.
