Erwin Schauenstein

Erwin Schauenstein (born June 22, 1918 in Graz , † 1999 in Graz) was an Austrian biochemist and university professor.

Life

Erwin Schauenstein was the son of Walther Schauenstein . He studied in Graz at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz , received his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1940 with Professor Max Pestemer and qualified as a professor in 1949. He was particularly interested in UV spectroscopy . In 1963 he became an associate professor, and in 1967 a full professor. He was the founding director of the new Institute for Biochemistry at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz.

In his further research he turned to the auto- oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in metabolic processes. One of his students was Hermann Esterbauer .

He was married and had a son Konrad and a daughter Konstanze.
