biography

Walter Schauenstein was the son of the doctor Adolf Schauenstein . After studying medicine from 1889 to 1896 at the University of Graz , he worked from 1887 to 1899 at the chair for general pathology at this university. From 1899 to 1900 he worked at the surgical clinic at the German University in Prague. He then moved to the Women's Clinic at the University of Graz and received his habilitation in 1909 . In 1908, Schauenstein recognized the gradual development of cervical cancer and thus created the basis for early detection of this tumor. In 1913 he left the clinic and subsequently continued to work as a gynecologist and obstetrician, but also devoted himself to professional issues. From 1932 to 1938 he was President of the Styrian Medical Association and in this function founded a pension fund for the surviving dependents of doctors. In 1915, Schauenstein married the concert pianist and piano teacher Else Burger (1880–1980). His son Erwin Schauenstein (1918–1999) became professor of biochemistry , his grandson Konrad Schauenstein (1944–2007) professor of general and experimental pathology at the University of Graz.
