After studying at the Polytechnic, he completed a university degree in mathematics, which he qualified as Dr. phil. completed. As a professor of mathematics and professor at the Polytechnic School in Hanover, he gained fame well after his early death in 1872 through the textbook Grundriß der Differential und Integralrechner, which was published in 2 volumes especially for engineers . The textbook appeared in a total of 14 editions by 1923. From the 3rd edition, J. Franz Meyer was a co-author.
