May Hallatt (born May 1, 1876 in Scarborough , England , † May 20, 1969 in London ; actually Marie Effie Hullatt ) was a British theater and film actress .

Life

May Hallatt was born Marie Effie Hullatt in Scarborough, England in 1876. After training as an actress, she appeared frequently on the theater stages in London. Due to her small stature and her rather inconspicuous but charismatic appearance, she was soon also in demand as a character actress in films. From 1934 she was seen in a number of British films.

Perhaps its most famous role she had in the film drama Black Narcissus ( Black Narcissus , 1947) as an Indian housekeeper Angu Ayah alongside Deborah Kerr . In 1958 she starred again alongside Kerr in the award-winning US film drama Separate Tables ( Separate Tables ), which on the eponymous play by Terence Rattigan based. In her role as the cynical Miss Meacham, she was the only one among the star cast who had already played her role at the theater in London and on New York's Broadway . In 1965 she retired from the film business.

May Hallatt died in London in 1969 at the age of 93. Her son Neil Hallett also became an actor.
