Hod Stuart began his career as a hockey player with Ottawa HC , for which he was active from 1898 to 1900 in the Canadian Amateur Hockey League . The defender then moved to his league rivals Quebec Bulldogs , with whom he also stayed for two years. In the 1902/03 season he ran for the Pittsburgh Bankers from the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League , where he could draw attention for the first time. In 17 games he scored eight goals as a defensive player and gave ten assists, for which he was awarded the all-star team of the league. With the Portage Lakes he played numerous friendly games in the 1903/04 season.

From 1904 to 1907, Stuart was with the Calumet Miners and the Pittsburgh Professionals in the International Professional Hockey League , the world's first fully professional ice hockey league under contract. There, too, he was one of the best players, so that he was elected to the league-wide All-Star team in 1905 and 1906. The left shooter last played for the Montreal Wanderers , with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1907 . Stuart died on June 23, 1907 as a result of a swimming accident. A memorial game was held in his honor on January 2, 1908, which was attended by 3,800 spectators. The proceeds from this went to his family.

In recognition of his achievements in ice hockey, Hod Stuart was posthumously inducted into the newly established Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 as one of the first twelve players . In 1966 he was also inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame . Stuart was buried in the National Cemetery in Ottawa .
