Mayer Matalon

Mayer Michael Matalon , OJ , (March 3, 1922 - February 3, 2012 ) was a Jamaican entrepreneur and bank manager.

Life

Matalon attended Jamaica College and after completing his education worked as a director of various Jamaican companies. He became a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica, a subsidiary of the Canadian Bank of Nova Scotia , on December 15, 1966 , and was Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors for most of the time he served the banking group ). After a reorganization, he also became Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly created Scotia Group Jamaica Limited. He was also chairman of the executive committee of the board of directors. Since September 2006, the Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation has awarded a scholarship to students in the Management Studies department at the University of the West Indies , which he named Mayer Matalon Undergraduate Scholarship in his honor . He resigned on May 26, 2011 from the Board of Directors of Scotiabank.

Matalon was temporarily chairman of the Jamaica Telephone Company as well as chairman of the ICD Group of Companies, founded in 1962 by the Matalon family, whose housing company WIHCON has made a significant contribution to creating affordable new living space through massive housing construction in Jamaica for decades. From the 1950s to the 2000s he also served as an advisor to high-ranking politicians, including Prime Ministers and opposition leaders Norman and Michael Manley, and Treasury Secretary Omar Davies . In the 1970s, Matalon headed the negotiating team that increased the revenue from bauxite exports , which is important for his country, by renegotiating contracts with major multinational customers.

In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Order of Jamaica .

Matalon was married and had five children.

His health had already deteriorated in September 2010 when he suffered a heart attack. He suffered a stroke in 2011 , after another he died on February 3, 2012. He was celebrated on February 6, after a funeral ceremony in the Sha'are Shalom Synagogue, attended by high-ranking politicians such as Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and Omar Davies were buried in the Jewish cemetery on Orange Street in Kingston .
