Maylandia fainzilberi ( synonyms : Metriaclima fainzilberi , Pseudotropheus fainzilberi ) is an African cichlid species that is endemic to the northeastern part of the East African Lake Malawi on sandy and scree coasts.

features

Maylandia fainzilberi has an elongated and laterally slightly flattened body and can reach a length of 13 cm. The mouth is large and cannot be completely closed by the thickened lips, similar to the Petrotilapia species. Males are light blue and show six to seven black to dark brown transverse bands on the sides of the body. The color intensity of these bands decreases more and more towards the back. The belly and chest are yellowish. The muzzle is black, the eyes are connected by a black forehead band. The rear section of the dorsal fin is yellowish and patterned with numerous yellow-orange dots. The bluish anal fin has four to six yellow, black-edged egg spots . The rear section of the caudal fin is slightly yellowish. Females and juveniles are blue-gray and their transverse ligaments are difficult to see.

Like all Mbuna species, Maylandia fainzilberi is an ovophilic mouthbrooder in which the female takes care of the brood. Males are polygamous.
