Peter Mayle (born June 14, 1939 in Brighton , East Sussex , † January 18, 2018 ) was a British writer .

Life

After starting out as a waiter and bus driver, Peter Mayle worked in the advertising industry. In the 1970s he began to write, first educational and educational books. In 1985 he gave up his employment and in 1987 he moved to Provence , where he renovated an old farmhouse and began to write books about his own experiences there, but also about the life, culture and mentality of southern France. A special focus is the description of the cuisine of southern France.

His works have been translated into 17 languages ​​and many have been very successful. His books My Year in Provence and Toujours Provence made his popularity so great that in 1997 he “fled” to Long Island in the USA . In his books he had described the location of his house in Ménerbes , which turned it into a destination for tourists, so that he could no longer save himself from intrusive visitors.

After a short time in the USA, however, he moved back to the south of France to live there again; However , he no longer gave the address of his residence in Lourmarin .
