Mayumi Yamashita

Mayumi Yamashita ( Japanese 山下 ま ゆ み Yamashita Mayumi ; born November 22, 1975 in Takayama ) is a former Japanese judoka . She was third in the heavyweight division in 2000.

Athletic career

The 1.70 m tall Mayumi Yamashita achieved third place at the 1998 World Cup tournament in Munich. In 1999 she won a bronze medal in the open class at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca. In 2000, she won the Japanese championships in the open class. At the Asian Championships in Osaka she won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division.

Four months after the Asian Championships, Yamashita competed at the Olympic Games in Sydney. In the second round she defeated the Russian Irina Rodina and in the quarter-finals Colleen Rosensteel from the United States each through Ippon. In the semifinals she was defeated by the Cuban Daima Beltrán after 2:07 minutes. The battle for a bronze medal also ended prematurely, after 4:00 minutes she won against the Frenchwoman Christine Cicot through Ippon.

In 2001, Yamashita won a silver medal at the East Asian Championships behind the Chinese Sun Fuming . At the 2001 World Championships , she lost her two fights against the British Karina Bryant and the Brazilian Priscilla Marques and retired early.
