Merja Kuusisto (born June 30, 1968 in Laihia as Merja Lahtinen ) is a former Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Kuusisto ran her first of a total of 41 individual World Cup races in March 1990 in Lahti , which she finished in 64th place over 5 km freestyle. In March 1991 she was third in the relay at the World Cup in Falun and in the 1991/92 season in Lahti with the 11th place over 30 km she got her first classic World Cup points. At the World Championships in Falun in February 1993, she came 32nd in the 30 km freestyle. In the 1993/94 season she came in all nine participations in the World Cup individual in the points and finished 25th place in the overall World Cup. In addition, she was third in the season in Lahti. At the season highlight, the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , she ran on 16th place over 15 km freestyle, 15th place over 30 km classic and fourth place with the relay. In the following season she scored points in all ten World Cup appearances and achieved her best overall result with 23rd place in the overall World Cup. At the 1995 World Championships in Thunder Bay she finished 29th over 5 km classic, tenth over 15 km classic and sixth place with the relay. Tenth place over 15 km classic was also her best individual placement in the World Cup. She completed her last World Cup race in March 1998 in Lahti, which she finished in 41st place over 15 km freestyle. In 1999 she won the Finlandia-hiihto 75 km freestyle. She is married to the former cross-country skier Mika Kuusisto .
