Mazhar Krasniqi (born October 17, 1931 in Pristina , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ; † August 8, 2019 ) was a New Zealand Orthodox Muslim community leader of Albanian origin.

In the 1970s and 1980s he was the director of the New Zealand Muslim Association . He also became the first President of the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand in 1979 . On December 31, 2002, the Governor General of New Zealand presented him with an award for special merit, which he received on April 4, 2003 in Wellington .

Life

Mazhar Shukri Krasniqi, son of Shukri Krasniqi and Aisha Minushi, was born in Pristina, Kingdom of Yugoslavia , in what is now Kosovo . In 1950 he fled from what was then communist Yugoslavia and came to New Zealand on board the refugee ship SS Goya. He reached Wellington on May 1, 1951, completely penniless. In the following ten years he worked in agriculture and industry in Southland, Waikato and around the Bay of Plenty regions . In 1956 he attended the first Muslim Congress, a nascent New Zealand Muslim association, and became an extremely active member of the Executive Committee. He was its member until his retirement in 1992. In 1975 and again in 1987 he was the president.

In 1960 Krasniqi opened a restaurant called "Albania" in Panmure, a suburb of Auckland . He became a successful and wealthy businessman. In 1970 he opened a kiosk in the new Panmure "Swimarama" and later founded the "New Zealand Middle East Export Company" and a waterbed company.

In 1965 Krasniqi took part in an important international conference in Mecca , Saudi Arabia. In the 1970s, Krasniqi had extensive contacts with the embassies of Muslim states in Wellington and Canberra and continued to take part in conferences and events abroad on behalf of the New Zealand Muslim community. He was involved in laying the foundation stone for the first mosque in New Zealand on March 30, 1979. Mosque members Mazhar Krasniqi, Hajji Rasheed Abdul Rahim, Said Alvi, Mohammed Yakub Patel and Hajji Mohammed Hussein Sahib took out mortgages on their own houses to finance construction. Further expansion of the hall was carried out in 1987 when Krasniqi was the president of the "New Zealand Muslim Association".

Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ)

After the mosque was founded, Mazhar Krasniqi became the first president of New Zealand's first national Muslim organization, the " Association of New Zealand Islamic Associations " (FIANZ).

End of 1980, Hajji Muhammad Ali Hrakan, general secretary of the relevant transferred Muslim World League (Rabitah Al-Alam al-Islami), Mazhar Shukri Krasniqi the right to issue clearance certificates for the export of halal -Meat and other foods to Saudi Arabia . Five years later, after long negotiations with the "New Zealand Meat Producers Board", a corresponding contract was signed with Ashraf Hajji Choudhary, President of FIANZ. In 1985, Krasniqi became the North Island's first FIANZ halal supervisor. His work took him regularly to Wairoa , Omahu and Morewa on the east coast.

During the 1992 Annual General Meeting of the NZMA, Mazhar Shukri Krasniqi was elected Patron, Haroon Rasheed Aziz of Fiji was elected President and Ali Feroze General Secretary. In the following year, Krasniqi retired from politics and from work at NZMA and FIANZ. He later took part in hearings of the US Congress.

During the Kosovo crisis in 1999, the New Zealand government accepted 650 Albanian refugees at Krasniqi's request. On April 1, 1999, the Albanian "New Zealand Civic League", of which Krasniqi was president, organized a demonstration in Auckland to express its support for the US-led NATO intervention in Yugoslavia.

On December 31, 2002, the Governor General of New Zealand awarded Mazhar Krasniqi the Queen's Service Medal (QSM) for his services to the community of Albanian and Muslim communities on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

In August 2005, FIANZ celebrated its silver association anniversary in a rather modest setting with a brochure in which Mazhar Shukri Krasniqi had a page dedicated to congratulations. A study entitled "100 Great Muslims of the 20th Century" published in New Delhi, India that same year listed the first presidents of FIANZ, among them Mazhar Krasniqi. His name stands alongside other well-known names in the Orthodox Islamic world such as Ahmed H. Deedat, Alija Izetbegović , Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, Al-Hajj Mohammed Husain Al Amini, Imam Hassan al-Banna , Ismail-Bey Gaspraly, King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud and King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud , Malcolm X , Mohammed Jinnah, Maulana Mohammed Ilyas, Muhammad Asad, Professor Kurshid Ahmad, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini Musavi, Sayyid Qutb , Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi and others.
