The McDaniel Nunatak is from burrs existing Nunatak in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Prince Albert Mountains, it rises 8 km north of Mount George Murray on the north side of the head end of the Davis Glacier .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of its own measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1956 to 1962. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after James R. McDaniel, satellite geodesist at McMurdo Station in the Antarctic winter of 1966.
