It was identified by United States Navy aerial photographs in 1966 and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey between 1971 and 1972 . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1977 after Mary Barbara McHugo (* 1929), a cartographer with the British Directorate of Overseas Surveys (1958–1986) and responsible for the maps over Antarctica (1960–1984).
