Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy ; the British Antarctic Survey carried out measurements of the Nunatak between 1968 and 1971. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1972 after the British mountaineer Charles Francis Meade (1881-1975) who had developed an expedition tent , the so-called Meade tent .
