The Meares Glacier is a 23 km long glacier in the US state of Alaska . It is located in the Chugach National Forest about 130 km east of Anchorage .
geography
The 1800 m high nutrient area of the Meares Glacier is located in the south of the Chugach Mountains between Aspero Peak and Mount Michelson . From there the glacier initially flows in a west-southwest direction. It later turns to the southwest and finally ends at the head of Unakwik Inlet , a side bay of Prince William Sound . The mean width of the glacier is 1.2 km. To the west of the Meares Glacier is the Yale Glacier , to the east of the Columbia Glacier .
Glacier development
The Meares Glacier is one of the few glaciers that is expanding.
Naming
The glacier was named in 1909 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) after Captain John Meares (1756-1809), an English navigator, navigator and explorer.
