MechWarrior (computer game, 1993)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MechWarrior from 1993 is a combat simulation video game from the science fiction world BattleTech for the Super Nintendo game console . It was developed by the Australian developer Beam Software and published via Activision . In Japan the game appeared under the name Battletech or バ ト ル テ ッ ク .

action

The action takes place in the year 3017, under Federated Suns in the Inner Sphere. The main character is an initially insignificant MechWarrior named Herras Ragen. Herras' father, Colonel Joseph T. Ragen, was once a House Davion officer and was exposed while attempting to infiltrate the Dark Wing Lance criminal cartel. In revenge, he and his family were murdered, only twelve-year-old Herras survived. Ten years later, Herras hired himself out as a MechWarrior mercenary and tried to find out information about the identity and the location of the criminals on his travels on the different planets. His first opportunity is on the planet Galatea, which is attacked by the criminal mercenary troops. Over time, he gets on the trail of the members of the Dark Wing Lance and takes revenge for the murder of his family.

Gameplay

The player starts with a lighter mech and earns additional money by accepting orders, which he can invest in expanding his selection of mechs and their equipment. A distinction is made here between action and side missions. The former drive the narrative forward, while the latter are mainly used to make money. The missions range from guard and reconnaissance missions to assassination attacks. The player controls his mech from a cockpit perspective through the three-dimensional world ( mode 7 ). The battles are fought in real time. The player can determine the equipment of his mech himself, whereby the number of equipment slots and the weight are a limiting factor. In the bars of the planets, the player collects information that tells him the next goals for action.

The game received mostly positive reviews.

“The graphics are really fun and the impact of missiles on your 'Mech creates an atmosphere. But for fans of the BattleTech scenarios, the game is sure to be a disappointment, as the strategy falls far short. Action game lovers should take a closer look at the module. "

“At first glance, it doesn't look particularly varied, but the later missions are a real challenge! [...] A hit for action fans. The strategic element of the model comes a little short, however. "
