The msw-winterthur or Mechatronikschule Winterthur is a training company with an attached vocational school of the city of Winterthur for technical professions. Until 2013 the full name of the school was still the metalworking school in Winterthur.

history

The school was founded in 1889 as the «Metalworkers School Winterthur». Just two years after it was founded, a new building was built for the school at its current location at Zeughausstrasse 56. The school was expanded in 1945 and 1958. Due to a lack of space, the school moved into several external locations, of which only the Automation Center at Hörnlistrasse 31 remained until summer 2018. After major renovations to the entire building on Zeughausstrasse, the Hörnlistrasse location was given up. Now all departments are reunited under one roof. This is mainly due to the budget cut decided by the city of Winterthur.

As part of the 125th anniversary of the metalworking school in Winterthur, the school was renamed the Mechatronics School Winterthur, with the abbreviation msw-winterthur, which has long been used. The name was changed in order to take into account the current training offer.

education

Msw-winterthur offers apprenticeships in the professions of automation technician , polymechanic and electronics technician .

School-based vocational training takes place both in the training workshop and in the vocational school. Among other things, there is a training partnership with Swiss Olympic . The knowledge acquired in the vocational school is applied and deepened in practice through teaching work or practical exercises.

The training company has already taken part in professional world championships several times . So achieved z. B. Basil Brunner in 2011 the silver medal at the World Championship for Electronics in London. Several apprentices from the Mechatronics School in Winterthur also took part in the Swiss Youth Research competition .

Before the cuts, the city of Winterthur spent around CHF 100,000 per apprentice on training. Due to the enormous financial pressure of MSW on the city's budget, various savings measures were decided several times.
