Saint George’s Church is an Anglican parish church in Fitches Creek on the northwest coast of the Caribbean island of Antigua in the state of Antigua and Barbuda . As the parish of St. George's with St. Mark's and St. Francis, it belongs to the diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba of the Church in the Province of the West Indies . It is dedicated to Saint George , the early patron saint of England.

history

Even at the beginning of colonization, the Fitch's Creek Estate was located here , a plantation of the Fitch family, one of the largest on the island. A first chapel can be found here in 1687.

Initially a branch church of St. Philip’s near Parham , it was raised to a parish in 1725 and set up as a rectorate (financially independent parish). Numerous other settlements had developed between the two ports of St. John’s Harbor and Parham (Old North Sound Harbor), and the routes to St. Philip’s became too far. The island was thus divided into the six parishes that still form the political parishes today, the Parish of Saint George is the smallest on the island.

In 1735 it was rebuilt in its current appearance.

The church by the sea, however, remained isolated, the places, especially Barnes Hill and Piggotts , developed mainly inland. Through the construction of the Coolidge Air Force Base (today VC Bird ) in World War II, the church was isolated from the first place, Coolidge and the resettled New Winthorpes : today it is primarily the village church of the mansion village Fitches Creek, which only opened in the late 20th century Century developed.

Spared earthquakes, the church was badly damaged by Hurricane Dog in 1950 and took 15 years to rebuild. When Hurricane Luis in 1995 it was again devastated, and then dedicated the 2,001th

The parish today also includes the subsidiary churches ( English Chapel of Ease ) St. Marks in Piggotts and St. Francis .

architecture

The towerless church building resembles a farmhouse in its appearance from the 1730s, the manor house (English country house) in stone-faced, compact design. It is believed that the church is a structural extension of the old chapel from 1687. It is presented as three single-storey houses arranged lengthways, which result in a three-aisled church building. The facade is thus symmetrically divided into three equal gable parts, each with a central wooden gate and gable windows above, and with high windows in between, all set off with round arches and white furs in the stone masonry, each with a small stucco cross as the only decoration. The façade is closed on both sides by corner pilasters with simple little fields that emphasize the width. A first-high, two-storey portico- like Söller in a clunky concrete construction is presented in the middle wing, which probably follows an earlier analog building element, but as a strange foreign body impressively represents the effort to ensure storm-proof construction.

The church, located off the main roads on the northern edge of Fitches Creek, is located in a stone-walled park, only a few dozen meters from the sea, and offers a wide view of the village, Fitches Creek Bay and Parham Habour .
