Mechthild Papoušek

Mechthild Papoušek (born October 1, 1940 in Jena ) is a German specialist in psychiatry and neurology, developmental psychologist and parent-infant therapist. She heads the Institute for Social Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the research and advice center for early development and communication.

life and work

Mechthild Papoušek grew up in Bethel ( Gadderbaum district ). Her father Walter Schulte worked as a psychiatrist for the Von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel , and from her childhood she was familiar with dealing with mentally and chronically ill people in her neighborhood.

After completing her specialist training as a psychiatrist, she initially worked for ten years as a medical-therapeutic in psychiatry. She later specialized in infant and toddler research . With her husband, the pediatrician Hanus Papoušek , she researched the early parent-child relationship , in particular communication in the first phase of life, early childhood regulatory disorders and excessive crying in infancy . Her work dealt, among other things, with intuitive parenting and the requirements of parenting education that strengthens intuitive parental skills.

She was appointed to the Children's Center in Munich by Theodor Hellbrügge . There she founded the crying outpatient clinic in the Federal Republic of Germany at the Children's Center in Munich in 1991 , the Munich office hours for baby cribs .

In 2010 she was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit .
