The children's center in Munich with a view of the garden

The Munich Children's Center is a social pediatric center as well as a specialist clinic for social pediatrics and developmental rehabilitation. It brings together specialists from social paediatrics , paediatrics , child neurology, psychology , genetics and pediatric audiology under one roof and specializes in the early diagnosis and treatment of developmental disorders and disabilities.

history

In 1968 the children's center was founded by Theodor Hellbrügge . As a result of his decades of research into child development, new knowledge was gained for early diagnosis, early therapy and early social integration of children with multiple and different disabilities. With the establishment of the Children's Center in Munich, a gap was to be closed that was urgently needed to care for children with special needs. For many years the various facilities of the children's center were spread out across the city. The outpatient clinic was in Lindwurmstrasse , the clinic in Nymphenburg , the kindergartens and schools in Sendling and in the Olympic Center. After a long struggle with the responsible ministries and authorities, Hellbrügge was able to push through a new building in Großhadern and a modern building complex, completed in 1987, was built in Heiglhofstrasse, in which all facilities were combined. Hellbrügge was director of the children's center until his retirement in 1990. During this time, numerous subsidiary centers were created in Germany and around the world based on the model of the Munich Children's Center.

The successor as medical director of the Children's Center in Munich was Hubertus von Voss in 1990. He expanded the children's center and managed it until his retirement in 2008. Kurt Vock was the medical director from 2008 to 2009, Michael-Andor Marton was the provisional director of the children's center from 2009 to 2011, and since 2012 Volker Mall has held the chair for social pediatrics , the new Medical Director.

Big changes have taken place over the years. The Montessori kindergarten and the Montessori schools with curative educational day-care centers were spun off and are now supported by a support association. The German Academy for Development Promotion and Health of Children and Adolescents eV was also outsourced. The children's center itself was converted into a non-profit GmbH in 2009 as part of the restructuring of the facilities in the Upper Bavaria district .

The kbo children's center in Munich today

The children's center Munich non-profit GmbH consists of the social pediatric center (outpatient clinic) and the specialist clinic for social pediatrics and developmental rehabilitation. The subsidiary of the hospitals in the district of Upper Bavaria - kbo got a new look in 2011 and is now called kbo-Kinderzentrum München.

The board of directors consists of Alexander Lechner as managing director, Volker Mall as medical director and Ute Schmitz as nursing director.

Specialized institutions

The social pediatric center, the outpatient clinic, is the largest specialized diagnostic and therapeutic outpatient clinic in Germany and treats more than 11,000 children a year. The tasks include the systematic developmental pediatric and developmental psychological examination, the development of treatment plans and the support of the children and their families.

In the specialist clinic for social paediatrics and developmental rehabilitation, which consists of 40 beds (child and parent-child wards), children are treated who require an inpatient stay due to serious disorders and the multiple stresses that arise as a result. Often not only the child, but also the parents or even the entire family needs professional support and supervision.

cooperation

In cooperation with the Munich-Schwabing Children's Clinic, the kbo Children's Center Munich also operates a social pediatric center (SPZ) at the Schwabing location . The Munich Children's Center cooperates with the Chair for Social Pediatrics at the Technical University of Munich, the only Chair for Social Pediatrics in Germany, for the best possible exchange between medical research and practice. The medical director of the children's center is also the chair holder.

As a cooperation partner of the kbo Children's Center in Munich, the Theodor Hellbrügge Foundation is dedicated to the dissemination of the programs developed in the kbo Children's Center in Munich for early diagnosis, early therapy and early social integration, the training, further education and training of specialists at home and abroad, promoting the establishment of new children's centers and promoting teaching and research in the field of developmental rehabilitation.
