Mechtild from Isenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mechtild von Isenburg († June 19, 1303 ) was the abbess of Nottuln Abbey .

Life

Origin and family

Mechtild von Isenburg grew up with her siblings Salentin II, Konrad (canon in Cologne) and Hermann in the family of nobleman Dietrich von Isenburg and Jutta von Merenberg. Her great-uncle was Bruno von Isenburg , who was married to Theodora von Wied and whose children Dietrich and Bruno inherited half of the property over the county of Wied through their mother in 1244 .

Career and work

Mechtild first went to the Wülfersberg monastery . On October 1, 1276, she signed a sales contract with the convent here as a Magistra . At the end of the year she was prioress and a short time later moved to the Nottuln Abbey , where monastery life was played out according to the rules of the Augustinian order . In 1278 she became the successor of Gertrudis von Bentheim , who worked as abbess at Metelen Monastery .

The fact that Mechtild authenticated as abbess of the Premonstratensian order on September 14, 1297 is quite strange. The family ties to the Munster bishop were probably decisive for the unusual change of monastery. Mechtild she remained in office until her death and was inherited by Jutta von Holte as abbess.
