Mechtildis Sinsteden

Mechtildis Sinsteden (born January 4, 1782 in Gustorf , † October 23, 1881 in Deutz ), married Neuhoff , emerged in the 19th century as a benefactress and benefactress of the poor. She has made a particular contribution to her place of birth, Gustorf.

Childhood and marriage

Mechtildis Sinsteden was the daughter of the miller Adam Sinsteden and his wife Anna Sibilla, nee Schiller. In 1818 she married Johann Kaspar Heinrich Neuhoff from Deutz, who was three years her junior and who died in 1845. The marriage remained childless.

Mechtildis Sinsteden as a benefactor

In 1881 Mechtildis Neuhoff left each of her nephews and nieces 250,000 gold marks . She bequeathed the Templerhof in Deutz, which she had lived in with her husband, to the local Catholic parish on the condition that a new church should be built on the property no later than 10 years after her death. In 1891 the construction of the St. Heribert Basilica began.

She had also done charitable work beforehand and donated over 30,000 thalers with her brothers Josef and Johann-Adolf for the new building of the Catholic parish church of St. Mary's Assumption in Gustorf. The monstrance of the Gustorfer Church was also decorated with funds from your donation.

The Sinsteden siblings donated the Gustorfer Mühle and their lands for the construction of the former St. Joseph Hospital in Gustorf. She herself supported the new building of the Catholic St. Cyriakus Church in Neuenhausen with 9,000 gold marks.

Mechtildis Neuhoff was buried in the old Deutz cemetery on Deutz-Kalker-Strasse in 1881 . She is depicted as the donor in the Knechtsteden monastery church on the second window on the right in the choir.

Mathildenstrasse near the St. Heribert Church in Cologne-Deutz (since 1888) is named after Mechtildis.
