The open-air museum Schwerin-Mueß (Mecklenburg Volkskundemuseum Schwerin-Mueß) is located in the former fishing and farming village of Mueß, which was incorporated into Schwerin in 1936, directly on the southern shore of Lake Schwerin .
The open-air museum provides information about the way of life of the Mecklenburg rural population from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Most of the buildings on the museum grounds come from the old village center. This historically grown village complex has remained almost unchanged for centuries until today.
Museum complex and collections
The approximately 5.5 hectare museum complex includes seventeen buildings and objects that can be visited. The centerpiece of the museum, the shortly after the Thirty Years' War created Büdnerei is with courtyard and barn.
Further objects are the shepherds' cottages, the village smithy moved from Stove ( Carlow municipality ) in 1975 , the village school from 1888 with the village teacher garden, a syringe house and an exhibition area for inland fishing. Over 100 species of crops that were important in the past, including around 50 different types of fruit that have been grown in Mecklenburg since the 19th century, are preserved here.
The collections include Mecklenburg folk culture, forest glass , hooded boxes , work, handicraft and everyday equipment, traditional costumes and costume jewelry, as well as regional fruit and vegetables. The folklore holdings go back to Richard Wossidlo's collections .
Dance and music events, theater performances, children's parties and handicraft markets also take place regularly in the museum courtyard.
