Med Stream ( English Mediterrenean Pipeline Project , Turkish Akdeniz Boru Hattı ; Hebrew מסדרון התשתיות [misde̞'ʁo̞n hataʃti'jo̞t] ) was a Turkish-Israeli infrastructure project from 2008 about the construction of an undersea corridor ofpipelinesto transportelectricity, natural gas, crude oilandwaterfromTurkeytoIsrael. The relocation of a telecommunications connection was also discussed. The natural gas and crude oil pipeline would be the extension of theBaku-Tbilisi-Erzurum Pipeline(BTE) and theBaku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline(BTC),respectively.

history

In July 2008 the responsible ministers of Turkey and Israel decided to carry out feasibility studies.

The plans included the construction of a 460-kilometer pipeline from the Turkish port city of Ceyhan to the Israeli port city of Haifa . The pipeline should transport 20–50 million tons of crude oil, 4–10 billion m³ of natural gas, 400–1000 million m³ of fresh water and up to 4.2  GW of electricity per year to Israel. Estimated construction costs were between $ 2 billion and $ 4.5 billion  . A construction time of three years was expected. The completion should have taken place in 2013.

The project came to a standstill as a result of the massive deterioration in political relations between Israel and Turkey since 2010 and after the almost simultaneous discovery of significant natural gas reserves in Israel's expanded economic zone in the eastern Mediterranean.
