The Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig was established in 1999 and presented to the public on May 4, 2001 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Sparkasse Leipzig . The focus of the foundation's work is the promotion of education and training for young people in the field of media. This includes the award of performance scholarships, for example within the scope of the Leipzig Media Prize, targeted project funding and the organization of events for political education, for example to commemorate the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig in 1989. The foundation projects are financed from the income from the foundation's assets as well as through grants and donations from third parties.

Prize for the freedom and future of the media

The foundation has been awarding the prize for the freedom and future of the media to journalists, publishers and media institutions since 2001. The prizes have been endowed with a total of 30,000 euros since 2004.

The price does not apply to a single journalistic publication. The prize is awarded to journalists, publishers, publicists and institutions who are committed to safeguarding and developing freedom of the press.

Axel Eggebrecht Prize

The Axel Eggebrecht Prize was founded in 2006. In memory of the feature author Axel Eggebrecht, this radio feature prize is intended to honor authors who have dedicated a long-term work, complete oeuvre or life's work to the radio feature and its further development.

The Axel Eggebrecht Prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is awarded every two years in alternation with the Günter Eich Prize (for a radio play life's work), which is also donated at the same time.

Günter Eich Prize

The Günter Eich Prize was founded in 2006 and announced for the first time. In memory of the radio play author Günter Eich, the aim of this radio play award is to honor the life's work of authors who have expanded the repertoire of the radio play genre in a multifaceted and steady manner.

The Günter Eich Prize is to be awarded every two years, alternating with the Axel Eggebrecht Prize, which is sponsored at the same time. The award was first presented in 2007, the year of Günter Eich's 100th birthday. It is endowed with 10,000 euros.

Erich Loest Prize

The Erich Loest Prize was donated in 2016 in memory of the Leipzig writer Erich Loest . The prize will be awarded for the first time on February 24, 2017 and then every two years and is endowed with 10,000 euros.

The Erich Loest Prize is intended to be given to authors from Central Germany. It is not advertised. The award winner is selected exclusively by the jury, in which each member has one vote.

Golden dove

The Golden Dove (Talent Dove until 2014) of the Media Foundation has been awarded since 2004 as part of the Next Masters competition at the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival. It is endowed with prize money of 10,000 euros, which serves as start-up funding for the next film project by a young director.

European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF)

The European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) is a non-profit organization based in Leipzig. The pan-European journalists' organization, which was largely initiated by the Media Foundation and founded in June 2015, aims to monitor compliance with the European Freedom of the Press Charter and to draw attention to violations. The charter is a non-binding guideline on freedom of the press, which was signed on May 25, 2009 by 48 publishers and leading journalists from 19 European countries in order to combat restrictions and threats to freedom of the press and the media. The ECPMF is on the way to becoming a European cooperative.

Leipzig School of Media (LSoM)

The Leipzig School of Media (LSoM) trains media professionals, journalists, IT professionals, editors and marketing people in part-time master’s courses and part-time courses. In 2004, the part-time training program with an internationally recognized master’s degree began as the Leipzig Media Master’s (MML) program. The program was a cooperation project between the University of Leipzig , the University of Technology, Business and Culture (HTWK) Leipzig and the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig.

The Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig founded the Leipzig School of Media in 2008 as a non-profit GmbH. Since then, the Leipzig School of Media has been offering in-service training as master’s degree programs, courses and training in cooperation with the University of Leipzig, the University of Technology, Business and Culture and other institutions such as the VDZ Academy .

European Institute for Journalism and Communication Research (EIJK)

The European Institute for Journalism and Communication Research (EIJK) is an independent and non-profit institute based in Leipzig.

The EIJK emerged in 2014 from the Institute for Practical Research in Journalism (IPJ). Michael Haller , who is now Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, developed the institute, which was founded in 2003 as a joint project between the University of Leipzig, the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig and with the support of the Sparkasse Insurance Saxony.

Research focuses on journalistic freedom of expression, quality journalism and journalistic independence under the institutional and social framework of advancing Europeanization. Cooperation partners of the EIJK are the University of Westminster in London, the University of Ghent , the University of Leipzig, the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig, the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences and the magazine Message.

Media campus Villa Ida

The Mediencampus Villa Ida is the seat of the foundations of the Sparkasse Leipzig, the Leipzig School of Media , the European Center for Press and Media Freedom , the European Institute for Journalism and Communication Research and the German Media Arbitration Court .

The campus consists of the Villa Ida, a Wilhelminian style villa, and the media campus building, which was built in 2006. Various conference and event rooms are available in the new building.
