Life

Haller studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and the University of Basel the subjects philosophy , social and political sciences . He received his doctorate with a thesis on Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's political philosophy in the transition to social theory.

After an internship at the Badische Zeitung , Haller worked as a senior editor at the Basler Zeitung and as an author at Weltwoche in Zurich . He then worked for thirteen years as an editor and reporter for the news magazine Der Spiegel in Hamburg and, most recently, head of department for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . His main research interests include print journalism (especially daily newspapers), media ethics and quality assurance / quality management in journalism. In journalism, he advocates a “normative-pragmatic” theoretical approach, according to which journalism in the media society has the function of informing society about its current state and fulfilling an “orientation function” towards the citizens: “Media made journalistic are out to do this to reach as many people as possible with generally understandable statements about relevant aspects of the current reality of events in order to give them orientation ”(Haller 2003: 182). According to Haller, the normative (democratic-theoretical) justified expectations of journalism can be seen in the fact that social communication should "succeed" in that society can ascertain its values based on current descriptions of reality conveyed by the media and review and change them in public discourse. This approach is based on the deliberative-based discourse and democracy theories ( Joseph M. Bessette ; Jürgen Habermas; Bernhard Peters). Haller understands the journalistic media as an orientation system necessary for democracy and understands journalism essentially “as communicative action (on). The aim of this action is successful social communication ”(2003: 181). Journalism that serves other purposes, such as purely commercial purposes, has a dysfunctional effect because it makes communication difficult or impossible.

Haller was the founding editor of the international journal for journalism message , a book series for practical journalism and the book series Leipziger Journalistik.

System und Gesellschaft was published in 1981, and in 1993 his book with Jürgen Habermas entitled Past as Future: Old Germany in New Europe? , 1990 a book of conversations with Friedrich Dürrenmatt with the title About the borders . His theory-oriented journalistic publications include in particular The Two Cultures - Journalism Theory and Journalistic Practice (2000; 2016) From freedom of the press to freedom of communication. On the normative conditions of an information-open civil society in Europe (2003), The media society or the dilemma of the incompatibility of identity and universality (2004) and the concept of independence (with Freimut Duve ) (2004). His book publications from empirical media research include “Free daily newspapers in the readership markets of Western Europe” (2009), “Freedom of information and press sales in Europe” (3rd edition 2012), “Need we newspapers?” (2014), “We need newspapers ! "(2015) and" What do you actually want? The Brave New World of Generation Y ”(2015). Two of his researches triggered strong public interest: "The 'refugee crisis' in the media - daily journalism between opinion and information" - study by the Otto Brenner Foundation (2017), "Between 'refugee crisis' and 'migration pact' - media learning processes put to the test “- A project of the Otto Brenner Foundation (2019).

In addition, Haller has published several journalism textbooks that have set standards in journalism training over the course of two decades, in particular: Recherchieren (1983ff.), Die Reportage (1987ff., 7th revised edition 2020) and Das Interview (1991ff.) As well as methodical Research as a UTB textbook (2017).

"We need media - online and offline - that are again based on the quality code of information journalism: reliability over speed, source transparency instead of colportage, description of facts instead of speculation about the cause." (2015: 10).
