Helmut Holzhey

Helmut Holzhey (* 11. March 1937 in Jawor ) is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of the University of Zurich . Holzhey's focus is on neo-Kantianism and the history of philosophy .

Life

Holzhey, son of a Protestant pastor, grew up in Ruhland in Lausitz and studied Protestant theology from 1956 to 1962 at the Church College in Berlin and at the universities of Göttingen , Marburg and Zurich, where he passed his exams. He then studied philosophy and sociology in Zurich from 1962 to 1968 . He received his doctorate in 1968 with a dissertation on " Kant's concept of experience ". From 1963 to 1975 Holzhey was a research assistant and from 1969 received a teaching position at the Philosophical Department of the University of Zurich. In 1974 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on " Cohen and Natorp ". In 1978 he received a position as assistant professor for philosophy, especially for the history of philosophy . From 1985 until his retirement in 2004 he held the position of full professor of philosophy, especially the history of philosophy.

In 1985, Holzhey founded the “Swiss Working Group for Ethical Research”, which he headed until 1999. From 1988 to 1998 he was head of the Philosophical Department at the University of Zurich. In 1998 he founded the research and research center for ethics at the Philosophical Seminar. From 1991 to 2000 Holzhey was a member of the board of the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences . From 1991 to 1996 he was the founder and president of the “Swiss Society for Research in the 18th Century ”. In 2002 Holzhey founded the "Hermann Cohen Society".

In 2004, Holzhey was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Philosophy and Social Sciences Department at the University of Marburg . In 2005 he received the Hermann Cohen Medal for Jewish Cultural Philosophy.

He is married to Alice Holzhey-Kunz .

In addition to his research on Kant and Neo-Kantianism, Holzhey is particularly well-known as the editor of the 14th new edition of the basic work on philosophy and history founded by Friedrich Ueberweg , Grundriß der Geschichte der Philosophie . To this work, Holzhey contributed essential parts of the philosophy of the 17th and 18th centuries. He is also the editor of Hermann Cohen's works.
