The Medical Transport Service (MTD for short or Organ Transport Service , OTD for short) is an establishment of the aid organizations (e.g. the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund , the German Red Cross , the Malteser Hilfsdienst or the Johanniter ) and some private companies. The area of responsibility includes the transport of blood preparations, organs , samples (for example, quick sections ), medication , antidotes and medical equipment or personnel (medical teams). In addition to the actual transport, the service also includes the search for blood preparations and the coordination of transport, for example in the context of organ donations .

The vehicles required for the MTD are mostly equipped with official radio , hands-free equipment for mobile phones and satellite-based navigation systems. They also have refrigerators for storing certain blood preparations and special signaling devices . Outwardly, the MTD vehicles are very similar to the emergency doctor vehicles or the vehicles for the home emergency call , in some cases even the same vehicles are used for all tasks. The MTD can only claim right of way under certain circumstances (when human life is in danger) .

Express trains are occasionally used for longer transport routes, and airplanes and helicopters are used for air transport. However, these are then normally supported by motor vehicles that hand over the goods or personnel to be transported to the air units or take them over from them and transfer them to the final destination.
