Wolfgang Kilian (lawyer)

Wolfgang Kilian (born February 3, 1939 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German legal scholar. His areas of expertise are legal theory , civil law , German and European business law and legal informatics .

life and work

Wolfgang Kilian studied at the University of Frankfurt am Main from 1959 to 1963 and was a trainee lawyer from 1964 to 1967 . During this time he also wrote his dissertation on the legal history of the state universities of fine arts and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD. From 1968 to 1972 he was a research assistant at the University of Frankfurt. In 1973 he qualified as a professor and was authorized to teach civil law, business law, legal theory and legal informatics. The following year he became a full professor at the University of Hanover . In 1976/77 he was dean there and in 1978, until his retirement in 2007, he was head of the Institute for Legal Informatics that he founded (until 1983 as a research center). In 1999 he was able to set up the European Postgraduate Course in Legal Informatics (EULISP). He turned down offers to the University of Hamburg (1983) and the University of Saarland (1987).

From 1977 to 1988 Kilian was the founding president of the Society for Legal and Administrative Informatics (GRVI) and from 1988 to 1999 a board member of GRVI and the German Society for Law and Informatics . He was also Vice President and, since 1997, President of the Association of European Legal Informatics Institutes (FIRILITE). Since 1998 he has also been a visiting professor in Breslau (Wrocław / Poland), where he initiated the establishment of the oldest Polish legal informatics institute, CBKE. In 1968 he married Sigrid Hilligen. Their son, Gregor, is a musician and a qualified lawyer.
