Medo de Sentir ( Portuguese for fear of feeling ) is a Portuguese-language pop song written by Marta Carvalho and interpreted by Elisa Silva . With the title she should represent Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

As early as November 2019, the Portuguese radio Rádio e Televisão de Portugal published a list of the composers participating in the Festival da Canção 2020 , including Marta Carvalho. In January it was announced that the corresponding interpreter would be Elisa Silva and that the title would be called Medo de Sentir . Elisa took part in the first semi-final of the preliminary decision on February 22nd, from which she could qualify for the final on March 7th. This she won with two points, although she could not collect the highest number of points from the audience or the jury.

Carvalho wrote the song with her guitar within a day. She led the production with Mikkel Solnado. The strings were arranged by Davide Rossi, the piano played by Daniel Lima. The mastering and mixing was done by Márcio Silva.

Music and lyrics

The song is about the fear of allowing feelings. The interpreter sings about how she doesn't know how to love someone again and if someone shakes her hand, she doesn't know how to react.

It consists of the typical structure of two stanzas, which alternate with the chorus and with the bridge before the last repetition. Medo de Sentir follows a slow pace. In the first part of the song, the instrumentation is limited to the piano and the syncopated use of the bass drum . The strings come in for the second verse, but only gain intensity during the bridge. The beat also becomes more complex at this position.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Portugal should have performed this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

Né Ladeiras, who took part in the Festival da Canção 1986 as an interpreter and in 2020 as a juror, said that the song would not make history. Irving Wolther, NDR , also doubted that the song would have reached the final of the Grand Prix and said that Victory in the preliminary decision as a "deadly boring compromise solution".

The fan blog Eurovisionary described Medo de Sentir as boring. On the other hand, the melody and the adherence to the local language were praised. According to ESCXtra, Portugal only confirmed its presence at the Eurovision Song Contest with the title. However, for the next participation of the interpreter, one would like a song with similar emotional depth. The German blog ESC Kompakt writes that the song is a “typical Portuguese contribution: calm, in the local language, authentic and absolutely doomed because it is too inconspicuous and completely past the mainstream”. Nevertheless, he has a "wonderfully soothing, warm basic feeling".

publication

In addition to the official Eurovision sampler, the title appeared exclusively on the compilation of the Festival da Canção 2020. There is no single release. A recorded acoustic version with Silva and Carvalho is only available as a YouTube video.
