Megaphon is a street newspaper that is currently sold directly on the streets of Graz and some other cities in Styria by around 300 people in social need. Around 15,000 newspapers are sold per month. Half of the selling price remains with the sellers.

The megaphone is a project by Caritas Graz. The newspaper first appeared in October 1995. This made it the first street newspaper in Austria. In addition to the editorial section, which deals with socio-political issues, there is also cultural information and an event calendar. Furthermore, the UNI megaphone offers free access to current scientific topics. This offer is aimed primarily at people who have no access to universities due to their education, origin or social position.

The megaphone was initiated by Maria Laura Bono , who was also editor-in-chief until 1998. Harald Schmied then took over this function.

In July 2003, the megaphone hosted the first Homeless World Cup soccer tournament in Graz. Teams from all over the world competed against each other on the main square in Graz. All team members were homeless. Austria won the tournament ahead of England and the Netherlands . Subsequently, the soccer tournament established itself as an annual event, with the venue being redefined every year.

Harald Schmied was increasingly concerned with the further development of the Homeless World Cup and so in 2004 Judith Schwentner took over the function of editor-in-chief. In 2007 the headquarters of the editorial office and sales department moved to the Auschlößl. The building on the edge of the Augarten in Graz also houses a café that is operated by the megaphone.

“The Auschlössl is a café, the megaphone a street newspaper.
Together the combination results in more than an ordinary café and more than a conventional magazine. "
