Harald Schmied

Harald Schmied (* 13. May 1968 , † 14. October 2018 ) was head of the Department of Communication & Fundraising of Caritas Styria , was in 2003 with the Steiermark Human Rights Award of the State excellent and was with Mel Young founder of the Homeless World Cup .
He was married, had two sons and lived in Graz .

Life

Growing up in Feistritz near Knittelfeld as the son of long-time mayor and elementary school director Heinz Schmied, Harald Schmied was editor-in-chief of the street newspaper for many years - from 1998 to 2004 - after schooling at the BG and BRG Knittelfeld and at the Shakopee Senior High School in Minnesota and studying in Graz Megaphone . In this role, together with Mel Young, at a conference in Cape Town, he developed the idea for an international soccer tournament with teams made up of homeless people . This tournament - the later Homeless World Cup - became European Capital of Culture as part of Graz First implemented in 2003 as the Homeless Street Soccer World Cup in the city center of Graz.

Awards & prizes

In March 2004 Harald Schmied was awarded the Human Rights Prize of the State of Styria by Governor Waltraud Klasnic for his achievements . In the same year he left the megaphone and devoted himself exclusively to the further development of the Homeless World Cup for over two years . On August 26, 2005, he and co-founder Mel Young received the UEFA Charity Check from Ronaldinho , a prize worth 1 million Swiss francs .

In March 2017, Harald Schmied received the Golden Merit of the Republic of Austria for co-founding and co-organizing the Homeless World Cup for many years. Harald Schmied was also awarded the Graz Human Rights Prize together with Gilbert Prilasnig in December 2017 for his social commitment .
