Megastomatohyla is a genus of the tree frog family(Hylidae). It occurs in central Mexico .

description

The genus Megastomatohyla was separated from the genus Hyla in 2005 after molecular biological investigations . It is mainly distinguished from other genera by various genetic differentiations. A possible morphological synapomorphism of the taxon is the greatly enlarged mouth area of the tadpoles , which contains 7 to 10 rows of upper lip and 10 to 11 rows of lower lip teeth.

Occurrence

The area in which the genus occurs includes the cloud and cloud forests of the Mexican states of Veracruz and Oaxaca .

Systematics

The genus Megastomatohyla was founded in 2005 by Faivovich et al. first described . The type species is Megastomatohyla mixe , it was originally described as Hyla mixe by William Edward Duellman in 1965. All 4 species currently included in the genus Megastomatohyla previously belonged to the genus Hyla .
